Privacy Policy

Effective date: October 26, 2026

Overview

This privacy policy explains what information WHAT HAPPENED clicker collects and how it is used. The site stores game state locally (via localStorage), and optionally posts public leaderboard entries to a leaderboard server when enabled. This page focuses on how data related to the game's features is handled.

Data Controller & Contact

Data controller: the operator of the WHAT HAPPENED clicker website. For privacy questions or to exercise your rights (access, deletion, correction, portability, restriction), contact: whathappenedclicker@gmail.com.

Information We Collect

How We Use Information

Legal Basis (for EU/EEA users)

If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA), we rely on the following lawful bases for processing personal data:

Advertising

The site can show ads through Google AdSense (publisher ID ca-pub-7259344384263515) on the game, achievements, casino and leaderboard pages, and counts visits to the game page with Google Analytics (through Firebase). Neither is loaded until you choose Accept in the notice shown on your first visit. If you choose Decline, or have not chosen yet, no AdSense or Analytics code is loaded, your browser does not contact Google for them, and no space is kept for ads. Accept and Decline are offered equally.

If you accept, Google may use cookies and other identifiers to provide, personalize and measure ads and to count visits. The use of AdSense and Analytics on this site is subject to Google's policies and privacy practices. For details, see:

Changing your choice

In the game, open Settings → Help & privacy → Ad & cookie choices. On the other pages, use the Ad & cookie choices link at the bottom of the page. Choosing Decline stops new ad and Analytics requests; ads already on the page go away when you reload it. Cookies that Google already set stay in your browser until you delete them in your browser's settings. Your choice is stored in your browser (localStorage, key wh_ad_consent); if you accepted in the earlier notice (key wh_cookie_consent), that still counts until you change it.

Ad personalization & opt-out

If you want to opt out of ad personalization by Google, visit Google Ads Settings. You can also opt out of many third-party ad networks via the Network Advertising Initiative (NAI) or the Digital Advertising Alliance (DAA).

Cookies and Local Storage

The site itself uses localStorage to save your game, your settings and your ad choice. The game needs these to work and they are not shared with advertisers. We do not set our own cookies. If you accept, Google AdSense and Google Analytics may set cookies or similar storage; Google Fonts and Firebase may also store small amounts of data, each according to its own policy.

Leaderboard Server

When you submit a score to the public leaderboard, only the username (up to 32 characters), your equipped title, your score (a number), and a timestamp are sent to the configured leaderboard API endpoint. If you run your own local leaderboard server, that server's operator controls how the data is stored and processed. The client will not automatically share your local save file—only the explicit leaderboard submission is sent.

Third-party hosting: the default leaderboard implementation may use Google Firebase / Firestore. See Firebase privacy information: https://firebase.google.com/support/privacy. The leaderboard server operator may collect additional data such as IP addresses or request logs necessary for security and abuse prevention.

Data Retention

Local save data remains on your device until you delete it (via the game's "Clear Save" control or by clearing localStorage). Leaderboard entries are retained on the leaderboard server according to that server's policy.

Accounts: your account and cloud save are kept until you delete them. You can delete your account at any time on the Account page (Security → Delete account), which removes the account and its cloud save immediately; the progress on your device is not affected.

Suggested default retention: if you operate a leaderboard server, consider retaining leaderboard entries for a reasonable period (for example, 12 months) unless you are required to keep them longer. Provide users with the ability to request deletion sooner.

Your Rights & Controls

EU/EEA / UK rights: you may have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict processing of, or obtain a copy of your personal data. To exercise these rights, contact whathappenedclicker@gmail.com. We will verify requests and typically respond within 30 days. In some cases we may request additional information to confirm your identity.

California residents (CCPA/CPRA): California residents have the right to request disclosure of personal information collected, categories of sources, purposes, and third-party recipients, and can request deletion or opt-out of sale/sharing. To exercise CCPA rights, contact whathappenedclicker@gmail.com. We do not knowingly sell personal information about consumers.

Children

The site is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have collected such information, please contact us (below) so we can remove it.

If you are a parent or guardian and wish to request removal of data for a child, contact whathappenedclicker@gmail.com and include evidence you are the child's parent or guardian and the username or timestamp of the entry to remove.

Security

We take reasonable steps to protect the data you store on the leaderboard (if you run a server) and to avoid accidental disclosure. However, no transmission or storage system is perfectly secure; use caution when sharing personally-identifying information.

When the site communicates with servers (for leaderboard submission) it uses HTTPS. Server operators should implement standard security practices such as access controls, least privilege for stored credentials, and regular log monitoring.

Contact

If you have questions about this privacy policy or want to request removal of leaderboard data, contact the site operator: whathappenedclicker@gmail.com.

International Transfers

Leaderboard services or third-party processors (such as Google/Firebase) may store or transfer data outside your country (for example, to the United States). By using the leaderboard service you consent to such transfer. If you are in the EU/EEA and concerned about transfers, contact the email above for details.

Complaints & Supervisory Authority

If you are located in the EU/EEA and you are not satisfied with our response to a privacy request, you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. The "Effective date" at the top indicates when the current policy took effect. Significant changes will be communicated on the site where reasonably possible.

Note: This guidance is provided for convenience and does not constitute legal advice. For full legal compliance tailored to your jurisdiction and hosting choices, consider consulting a qualified privacy attorney.
